Text Box: History
Pebane has a port which could berth large ships in “days gone by” to transport copra, dried coconut flesh. You can still see the ruined sheds in the port harbour). One can get a picture of how large this copra industry was by the vast coconut plantations, the largest in the world, that surround Pebane. The port was also used to carry away tons of ‘lagosta’ (lobster) per week. The derelict lobster ponds can be seen on one of the beaches close to the harbour. The small town of Pebane was the holiday ‘play ground’ for the rich – the remains of great mansions bear witness to this (a couple have since been restored), as do the remains of seven restaurants. The small Airport building is rather derelict –but the landing strip is still well kept - and used regularly. The history of our project only goes back a few years. In 1995 we were in Pebane, looking for good fishing areas. Back then we were so taken by the area that, ten years later when we decided to build on the coast – Pebane was the only choice. Mention must be made that world fishing and scuba diving championships have been held in the past at Pebane. Hopefully this may once again become an international venue.

Geography

We are approximately 17 degrees south of the Equator. This makes us warm to hot all year round. The proximity to the beach and being among the coconut trees,  with a sea breeze lends itself to a wonderful tropical venue for the serious fisherman and the whole family. The Mozambique Channel that runs between Madagascar and Mozambique is said to be the best game fishing in the world – one wonders who said that? Pebane is situated in Zambezia which is one of five provinces. The provincial capital is Quelimane some 200km south of us and 320kms by road. The area around Pebane is called Macuacuane (pronounced ‘Mah koo kwa nee’) by the locals, meaning ‘bush’ – hence ‘Macuacuane Lodge’ got its name.
